Bassline Agent needs to know your chords first. SOURCE says where they come from, and the screen shows whether they are exact or detected, and how sure it is.

Load it on its own MIDI track
Put Bassline Agent on a new MIDI track next to your chords. Its built-in synth plays the bassline as soon as there is one.

Set MIDI From to your chord track
On the Bassline Agent track, set MIDI From to the track with your chords (a clip track, or a Chord Agent 2 track with Chord Agent 2 in the second dropdown) and Monitor to In. Press LISTEN and play: it records one pass and works out the chords. FOLLOW keeps listening, pass after pass.

Drag a MIDI file onto the window, from Finder, Live's browser or any DAW. SOURCE → CHOOSE A .MID FILE… does the same in hosts that won't drop files on plug-ins.

A bassline writer that listens
The server writes the bassline over your chords. The same C++ engine as Chord Agent 2 plays it, grooves it and re-fits it on your computer.
Listen and follow
LISTEN records one pass of your chord track (the loop region, or 1, 2, 4 or 8 bars on the song's bar grid) and works out the chords. FOLLOW keeps listening: edit the chord clip and the next pass updates the bassline. Empty passes keep the last chords.
Re-fits instantly
When the chords change, the bassline you have re-fits to them straight away, offline, with no server call. Refine and NEW BASSLINE then write over the new chords.
Drop a .mid
Any MIDI file works: a chord clip exported from your DAW, a pack, a sketch. Bassline Agent detects the chords and shows how sure it is.
Lock, refine, roll
Lock bars with the padlocks, then REFINE with words or ask for a NEW BASSLINE. The PITCH and RHYTHM styles, the COMPLEXITY, RANGE, OCTAVE, DENSITY, SWING and HUMANIZE knobs and the ROLL buttons re-render instantly on your computer. AS WRITTEN plays the server's notes; the other styles rebuild them from the chords.

Pick one and the bassline follows its progression live and exactly, through generate, refine, transpose and history. Questions
Do I need Chord Agent 2?
No. Bassline Agent writes over any chords: a MIDI clip on another track, a keyboard part you play, or a .mid file. It works great with Chord Agent 2's MIDI output too.
How do I give it my chords in Ableton Live?
Put Bassline Agent on its own MIDI track, set MIDI From to your chord track (for a Chord Agent 2 track, choose Chord Agent 2 in the second dropdown) and Monitor to In, then press LISTEN or turn on FOLLOW and play. In other DAWs, route the chord track's MIDI into Bassline Agent's track, or drop a .mid on it.
What happens when I change the chords?
With FOLLOW on, the next pass with different chords re-fits the bassline you have to them instantly, on your computer. Dropping a new .mid does the same.
Can it link straight to Chord Agent 2?
Yes, with Agent Link in Chord Agent 2.1: pick LINK · Chord Agent 2 under SOURCE and Bassline Agent follows that Chord Agent 2's progression live and exactly. Chord Agent 2.1's DRAG MIDI files carry the exact chords too. LISTEN and FOLLOW still work with Chord Agent 2's MIDI output or any other chord track.
Does it need an internet connection?
Yes for GENERATE, REFINE and NEW BASSLINE: the bassline is written on our server. Everything else runs on your computer and works offline: listening, re-fitting, the pitch and rhythm styles, ROLL, sounds, playback, MIDI out and drag MIDI.
How does the licence work?
After checkout you get a licence key (CA2-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX). Paste it into Bassline Agent's LICENSE card. One licence works on 2 computers. A bundle key unlocks all three agents.
